For the last several years my Hubbie and I have had a new weekend hobby ... shortly before he hit that mid-century mark in 1998, Hubbie decided to start racing ... cars ... on dirt-tracks ...
... there should be, in every life, a place ... where you could come & visit your past, & the past of your people, & know that whatever happens outside, here timelessness lives. (from The Colony by Anne Rivers Siddons) ... All of us need a place like that ... a place where we can have our history close at hand, where we can see it ... touch it ... learn from it.
I spent the first 18 years of my life in Rockdale, Milam County, Texas. And my Mother and my little brother and one of my sisters and multiple other kith & kin still live there.
But some of my collateral kin were living in Milam County before 1850, which was the year my 3rd great-grandaunt Matilda donated the family land that is the current site of Belton. Other collateral kin drifted into the county around the time of the beginnings of the town of Rockdale, and my direct ancestors were living there a few years later.
